Sir Douglas Littley The Third Goes to the Beach

A Golden Retriever puppy adventure from Sedona to Laguna and Dana Point

Every great dog deserves a great first trip. Our Golden Retriever puppy is Sir Douglas Littley The Third. Doug for short. He comes from mama Elsa and papa Bentley at Turquoise Trail Retrievers. A three year old named him. The name stuck. The attitude too.

We planned a long weekend at the beach. Laguna and Dana Point in California. Three days and two nights. We left Sedona on Thursday night. We came home late Sunday. Doug met the ocean. Our kids met joy with paws.

“Doug became a mermaid and a sea turtle. He built sand castles. He built holes. He built memories.”

The Drive From Sedona

We packed towels, toys, snacks, and Doug’s blanket and started after I got off of work for the day.

With the sun setting the desert skies were beautiful and suprisingly the roads were very quiet. Every stop was a mini adventure. He met new people, wagged his tail at every gas station, and greeted strangers as if he'd known them forever.

Classic Golden energy. Calm and Kind.

Mr. Doug took turns resting his head on our laps and the kids’ laps, watching the lights pass by.

Our kids passed the time by telling Doug stories about the ocean. By the time we reached California, he was practically a sailor at heart.

First Steps On The Sand

Friday morning, Doug took his first steps on the beach.

At first, he wasn’t sure what to make of the sand. It shifted under his paws, warm and soft, like a giant blanket. Within seconds, he started digging. Big paws with even bigger determination.

Before we knew it, he’d made a hole large enough to qualify as beachfront real estate.

He helped our kids build sandcastles, then promptly dug moats around them. We joked that Doug wasn’t a dog at all, but a mermaid and sea turtle combination, perfectly adapted for beach life.

“People asked about his full name. We told them. Sir Douglas Littley The Third. A three year old CEO of naming rights.”

Meeting People And Pups

Doug met plenty of new friends that weekend.

Other dogs, kids, families... everyone wanted to meet “the golden puppy with the fancy name.” Or maybe it was just their first time seeing a Mer-Pup or Puppy Turtle.

We kept him safe, socialized, and happy through every new interaction. He wagged, smiled, and soaked up the attention.

At the state beaches, he ran through the waves. At the local beaches, he splashed with children, his tail wagging like a metronome of joy. He learned the rhythm of the ocean, and the ocean learned the rhythm of Doug.

When he got tired, he’d climb into his doggy stroller, a beach chariot fit for Sir Douglas himself. With sand still clinging to his fur, he’d nap in his stroller as we at delicious frozen yogurt.

Pup Cups And People Watching

We found dog friendly spots near the boardwalk. Doug tried his first pup cup. He sat for it. He posed for it. He wore a cream mustache like a champion. Under cafe tables he rested and watched the world go by. Zero begging. Zero barking. Gold star puppy.

When he needed a break, he rode in his doggy stroller. Shade. Breeze. Nap. Back to fun.

Nights By The Ocean

We stayed three days and two nights. Evenings were quiet. Waves in the background. Kids asleep. Doug curled on his blanket. Happy and salty. Saturday faded slow.

On Sunday we drove home to Sedona. Desert replaced water. Red rock replaced blue. Doug slept in laps and dreamed of gulls. He travels well. He loves the ride. He loves the family more.

What Doug Taught Us

Doug’s first beach trip was more than a family getaway, it was a reminder of everything a Golden Retriever brings into your life.

They’re gentle with children, confident in new environments, adaptable to travel, and full of love. Doug didn’t just enjoy his first vacation; he showed us how joy can live in every moment, whether it’s chasing a wave or sharing a pup cup.

That’s what makes our Goldens special. They aren’t just dogs. They’re family.

Why Goldens Fit Our Family

  • Gentle with children
  • Brave in new places
  • Calm around people
  • Playful in all weather
  • Ready for travel from Arizona to the coast

Doug shows the Golden heart. Sweet. Steady. Social. Trips from Sedona to Laguna and Dana Point are simple with a puppy like this. He is easy to guide. He is easy to love.
